Do you have a thing?
Let me ask you? Do you have "a thing" with your kids?
Something that you and you alone do with each of your children.
For instance, Kenzo and I have a Sonic Peanut Butter Milkshake thing. Pretty regularly, when we are out running around, we stop and get Peanut Butter Milkshakes at Sonic. She is the only one I do this with. It is our "thing."
With Suzie, our "thing" is running to the "Tiger Store" (her name for a nearby convenience store – long story about the name) to get Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Mabel and I are still trying to find our thing. Several have sort of maybe looked like they were our "thing," but nothing has stuck yet.
But the thing is I think Dads need to have a "thing" with each of their kids. And it can’t be the same "thing" and it can’t be a forced thing. You just gotta let the "thing" come to you. And after you do it a couple of times you will realize, "hey this is our ‘thing.’"
And the reason I think this is that one of the most important things you can do as a dad is to plant memories inside your children’s head. And just like learning math or science, where repetition is important, so it is with building memories with our kids. And having your "thing."
